Neoprene is an elastic sponge. It wants to stretch. The metal snap does not stretch at all.
When the customer pulls, the rubber stretches away from the metal. All the pulling force hits the tiny hole where the metal punches through the fabric.
If the rubber is weak, the metal acts like a knife. It cuts right through the sponge. The snap pulls out.

Never punch a metal snap directly through bare neoprene. You must reinforce the hole. Place a small, hidden square of heavy-duty, non-stretch nylon on the inside of the bag, directly behind the snap. The metal prongs must pass through the nylon and the neoprene together. The nylon patch acts as an anchor. It completely stops the metal from slicing through the rubber.
Use Washers for Rivets
If you are attaching metal D-rings or handle hooks using rivets, you must use backing washers. A bare rivet will pull through a soft sponge easily. A wide metal or plastic washer spreads the pulling pressure over a much larger area of the high-density rubber.
Choose Tough Outer Fabrics

How can I test the rubber density before I install the hardware?
Hold the bare rubber sample in your hands. Pinch it hard. Squeeze it between your fingers. Cheap, low-density foam feels like empty air. It collapses instantly. Does a thicker material hold a zipper better than a thinner material?
