Think of a bar-tack like a heavy metal deadbolt on a door.
When a customer pulls aggressively on the cuff of the wetsuit, the pulling force travels down the seam. When the force hits the bar-tack, it stops. The dense cluster of thread absorbs the kinetic energy. It prevents the force from pulling the main seam apart.
Generic trading companies and cheap workshops hate bar-tacking. It requires specialized sewing machines. It takes extra time. It uses extra thread. To maximize their own profit margins, they simply skip this step. They leave the end of the seam weak and unprotected.

Will a bar-tack make the wrist cuff feel uncomfortable?
No. A properly sewn bar-tack is very small and sits flat against the seam. It is positioned at the very edge of the opening where it does not press heavily into the skin. The immense durability it adds far outweighs any minor change in texture.
Does edge piping stop water from entering the wetsuit?
Edge piping provides comfort and prevents tearing, but it is not a waterproof seal. To stop water from flushing into a winter wetsuit, elite factories use "glide-skin" or "smooth-skin" rubber on the inside of the cuff. This bare rubber sticks to the skin like a suction cup, creating a watertight barrier.
Why do some wetsuits use a zig-zag stitch instead of edge piping?
