Good canyoneering booties are "vulcanized."

First, the factory shapes the neoprene upper. Next, they wrap raw, sticky rubber tape around the bottom edge. This rubber wrap is called "Foxing."

Finally, they put the entire shoe into a giant, hot oven. This baking process is called vulcanization. The extreme heat melts the raw rubber foxing and the glue directly into the neoprene upper.

But here is the fatal flaw.

Standard neoprene hates heat.

If you put standard wetsuit neoprene into a 150°C (300°F) oven, three bad things happen:

  1. The rubber sponge shrinks.

  2. The nylon fabric warps and wrinkles.

  3. The lamination glue boils and fails.

When the shoe comes out of the oven, it looks okay. But the bond is secretly dead. A few days on a rocky river, and the rubber foxing just peels right off.

Q1: Can we use standard cold-glue instead of hot vulcanization?
You can, but it is not recommended for canyoneering. Cold-glued soles are fine for light beach walking. But for jumping on sharp rocks in strong river currents, cold-glue is too weak. Vulcanization is the only way to ensure the rubber foxing and the sole survive extreme abuse. You must use heat-ready neoprene.

Q2: Will the high heat make the neoprene too stiff to wear?
