Most generic suppliers use a method called "piece dyeing" or "surface dyeing."
The factory takes a roll of plain white nylon or polyester fabric. They dip this white fabric into a massive vat of hot, colored dye. The dye coats the outside of the threads.
Think of this like a radish. A radish is red on the outside, but it is white on the inside.

Can you make any custom Pantone color using dope-dyed yarns?
Dope-dyed yarns are incredible, but they have a limitation. Because the color is mixed into the raw plastic at the chemical plant, we cannot mix small, custom Pantone colors easily. Dope-dyed yarns are usually available in a massive catalog of standard, highly popular colors. For highly specific, custom-branded Pantone colors, we use advanced high-temperature disperse dyeing to lock the color deeply into the fibers.
Will dope-dyed fabric make the neoprene feel stiffer?
No. The dyeing process does not change the mechanical stretch of the yarn. Dope-dyed nylon and polyester remain incredibly soft and highly elastic. When laminated to our premium CR rubber core, the final composite stretches effortlessly with the human body.
