The Science of the Sponge: Why Rubber Shrinks

Frequently Asked Questions for Procurement Managers

How much shrinkage is considered normal in the neoprene industry?
Because neoprene is a dynamic sponge, a very small variance is standard. An acceptable industry tolerance for length shrinkage is typically between one and three percent. If your material shrinks by more than three percent, the factory used terrible tension control during lamination.

Will washing the neoprene cause it to shrink even more?
If the material was laminated using tension-free rollers, normal washing in cold water will not cause significant shrinkage.
